Engr. Ronald M. Makinano and Engr. Linbert C. Cutamora, CSU Phil-LiDAR 1 Supervising Science Research Specialists, and Mr. Edsel Matt O. Morales, CSU Phil-LiDAR 1 Information Technology Officer I, attended and presented research papers at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) 2016 held at China National Convention Center (CNCC), Beijing, China from July 10-15, 2016. IGARSS is annual remote sensing conference organized by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) which provides the ideal forum for scientist, practitioners, and industries, as well as decision makers. The main theme of IGARSS 2016 is “Advancing the understanding of our living planet”. The technical program covers all remote sensing related areas including advances in analysis techniques, applications to land, oceans, atmosphere, environmental sensing, sensors and platforms, data management/education and policy as well as special topics of this year, such as natural hazards and environment pollution, global change, big data in geoscience and interdisciplinary topics.
One of the several parallel activities during the 5-day conference was a technical session on Digital Terrain Models. The session gathered several participants to present and discuss research papers related in assessing, evaluating and improving accuracy and quality of different derived-Digital Elevation Models (DEM). During this session, Engr. Ronald M. Makinano presented research paper entitled “Vertical Accuracy Assessment of ALOS World 3D-30m Digital Elevation Model over Northeastern Mindanao, Philippines” which was outcome of the CSU Phil-LiDAR 1 project.
On the last day of the conference in ‘Floods’ technical session in which tackled about different applications related in flooding, Mr. Edsel Matt O. Morales and Engr. Linbert C. Cutamora presented other two research papers which were also outcomes of CSU Phil-LiDAR 1 project. Mr. Edsel Matt O. Morales presented “Near-Real Time Simulation and Geo-Visualization of Flooding in the Philippines’ Deepest Lake”, while Engr. Linbert C. Cutamora presented “Integrating LiDAR and Flood Hazard Simulation Models in Determining Exposure and Vulnerability of Buildings to Extreme Rainfall-Induced Flood Hazards”.
The conference was successful, gathering together more than 1,800 participants from different countries and regions in which addressing and understanding related issues, exchange of ideas, obtaining the most-up-to-date information about science and technology of remote sensing.
