5th Phil-LiDAR 1 Mindanao Cluster Conference

The 5th Phil-LiDAR 1 Mindanao Cluster Conference is the latest in a series of conferences that are being organized and hosted by Mindanao-based Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) involved in the Nationwide Phil-LiDAR 1 Program. This time, the conference is hosted and organized by the Caraga State University Phil-LiDAR 1 Project (CSU Phil-LiDAR 1). For more details, please visit the official conference website at http://csulidar1.info/conference/

The Phil-LiDAR 1 Program, also called “Hazard Mapping of the Philippines using LiDAR” is a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) initiative that engages the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD) and fourteen (14) HEIs to produce detailed flood hazard maps of more than 200 flood prone river systems throughout the country using Light Detection and Ranging or LiDAR technology. LiDAR is a modern remote sensing technology that uses light in the form of pulsed laser to generate precise three-dimensional (3D) information about the Earth’s surface characteristics. The Phil-LiDAR 1 program and its predecessor, the Disaster Risk and Exposure Assessment for Mitigation (DREAM), serve as an urgent response to the echoing need to better the country and its people for natural disasters, particularly flooding. In Mindanao, the Phil-LiDAR 1 Program is being implemented by the following HEIs in close collaboration with the University of the Philippines-Diliman (Program Head), the PCIEERD, and the DOST:

  • Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU)
  • Caraga State University (CSU)
  • Central Mindanao University (CMU)
  • Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT)
  • University of the Philippines-Mindanao (UPMin)

The 5th Phil-LiDAR 1 Cluster Conference is designed to be a 3-day activity, with the main conference held on the first day.

The main conference will continue to deliver the goal of previously held conferences which is to provide a venue for the Phil-LiDAR 1 Program – Mindanao Cluster to present its progress and updates as well as far-reaching opportunities to its stakeholders and beneficiaries which includes National, Sub-national and Regional Line Agencies particularly those involved in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Local Government Units, and the entire Mindanaoans. It consist of messages, keynote talks, and technical presentations that will be delivered by highly-regarded personalities from the DOST, the Phil-LiDAR 1 Program, and other aligned agencies like the Mindanao Development Authority, the National Economic Development Authority, and the Office of Civil Defense, among others. Other activities include exhibition of project outputs, and turn-over of flood hazard maps to LGUs.

The 2nd and 3rd days of the conference are especially devoted to the members of the Phil-LiDAR 1 Program, and include activities such as the Mindanao Cluster Project Meeting, and site visits in covered river basins.
